Biography

Katie elsewhere on the web: Shed me Clothes Time for Heroes: Design Must Go Green MA Fashion and the Environment Student Group

Katie Ledger is a fashion researcher/designer who focuses on sustainable and environmental issues within her work. Katie feels that fashion is a somewhat understudied area in terms of sustainability, especially in relation to its vast production line. Projects initially started small, for example exploring methods to prevent disposal, yet have took a turn to reducing the environmental impact of the use phase. The use phase of a garment has been proven to be the most environmentally damaging due to laundering and the most unpredictable due to varying consumer habits.

Katie completed her BA in Fashion at Coventry University in 2009 and immediately enrolled onto the MA Fashion and the Environment course at London College of Fashion. The MA has allowed Katie to work closely with The Centre for Sustainable Fashion to explore fashion from an alternative perspective, a scientific one. This lead to an exploration into biomimetics and eventually the research project Shed Me Clothes.

Katie has experience working in the design teams of London Denim and George at Asda. Current experience includes assisting in the head office of organic beauty company Jo Wood Organics.

Katie has assisted in projects with sustainable development organisation Forum for the Future, fashion activist Otto von Busch and textile recyclers TRAID. She has also assisted on events with Ethical Fashion Forum and the Environmental Justice Foundation.
